Lotto No. 47

A pair of bentwood chairs mod. no. 6, designed by August Thonet,

Vienna 1850, manufactured by Gebrüder Thonet in around 1870, bent beechwood, stained, foot ring, upholstered (replaced) seat and backrest medallion, stamped in a circle: THONET, height c. 93 cm, width c. 44 cm, depth c. 54 cm, height of seat c. 45 cm. (DRAX)

Cf. Lit.:
Sitz-Gelegenheiten. Bugholz-und Stahlrohrmöbel von Thonet, Germanisches Nationalmuseum Nürnberg, 1989, p. 196, no. 29 (chair mod. no. 13), pp. 188–191, nos. 11–17 (Liechtenstein model), p. 193, no. 22 (chair mod. no. 9)

This design, albeit in a slightly heavier and stockier version, was first included in the Thonet programme in 1859 as mod. no. 13 and presented at the 1862 World’s Fair in Paris. The “eye” used at the leg forks goes back to the idea of decorative elements, as Thonet first used them on the Liechtenstein chairs. In the present example, however, it is reduced from decorative carving to the formal minimalism of a loop. In a similar form to mod. no. 6, we also find this spandrel solution on the London World’s Fair chair from 1851.
