Andreas and Oswald Achenbach | 19th Century Paintings | April 2017
Andreas Achenbach and his younger brother Oswald Achenbach were known in their day as the ‘Alpha and Omega’ of landscape painting. Leaders on the art scene of their hometown of Düsseldorf, the two also travelled Europe and made big names for themselves internationally. Andreas and Oswald Achenbach devided up their subject matter by region. Andreas Achenbach, who was drawn to northern landscapes, mastered the art of the snapshot. Oswald Achenbach, on the other hand, reveled in southern scenery. Dorotheum’s April auction of 19th century paintings featured four outstanding works by the Achenbach brothers.
