An old sacred Indian relief, very finely crafted from dark grey stone. It depicts the four-armed Hindu god Vishnu (the ‘protector’) with a tall, godlike crown and his associated symbols (wheel, club, snail, lotus). His wife, the goddess Lakshmi, stands to his left on top of a tortoise, his mythical steed, the bird of the gods Garuda (below), stands to his right. A very charming, relatively small object with clear remains of red sacrificial paste.
Height: c. 23 cm; width: c. 14 cm. 18th/19th century or earlier. (ME)
