ENORMOUS INTEREST FOR CONTEMPORARY ART

Warhol’s painted silkscreen for 753,000 euros: successful contemporary art sale at Dorotheum

Works that are fresh on the market are rewarded, as was evident at the auction of contemporary art at Dorotheum on 1 June 2022. Andy Warhol’s 1974 portrait of his favourite artist, the Surrealist photographer Man Ray, realized an outstanding 753,000 euros, the highest auction price for a comparable work by the artist. The painting from a six-part series comes directly from private ownership.

Twenty bidders on the telephone alone fought an intense bidding battle for a work by the German artist Hans Hartung. His abstract painting T1982-R19 multiplied its estimate, reaching 365,500 eurosJiri Dokoupil's untitled soap bubble painting was also much sought-after, changing hands for 265,500 euros. Dorotheum’s premiere for the African shooting star Aboudia was a great success. His graffiti-inspired work went to a bidder for 240,500 euros. A material picture "Snake in a Square" by Antoni Tàpies reached 315,500 euros. Art from Italy - especially Carla Accardi, Giuseppe Capogrossi and Enrico Castellani - performed strongly, as is traditional.

Austrian art also yielded remarkable results, with Wolfgang Hollegha’s large-format work fetching an outstanding 153,000 euros.
