four-legged oak frame construction, dimensions: height c. 75 cm, length c. 125 cm, depth c. 75 cm. Signs of age and use, scratches and abrasions, isolated minor chipping. (MHA)
This piece of furniture comes from a row house on Melchartgasse in Vienna’s 13th district. The house was part of the ‘Ostmark’ garden city settlement planned by the architects Heinrich Schmid and Hermann Aichinger in 1912/1913. Both architects have studied with Otto Wagner at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and, like many of their fellow students, diverged considerably from their mentor in their own designs.
