A Yemeni collier necklace with a box-shaped centrally positioned centerpiece decorated on the front side with twisted silver wire, and with rosettes and round silver plates soldered on. The reverse is made of smooth silver. Four hanks come out on each side of this centrepiece to reach the triangular finials, with similar decoration to the central piece. All four hanks are strung with silver beads of various sizes and designs (solid, angular, round, hollow, filigree silver wire etc.). Red glass beads are strung between the silver beads.
Seven pendants hang from the central piece and the lower hank of beads, composed of three round pendants, and four teardrop-shaped pendants elaborately woven from thin silver wire, set with silver flowers and with small silver spheres dangling below. A piece with a hook-and-eye closure on silver chains. No damage.
A very carefully executed, charming piece of craftsmanship by an urban silversmith, probably from Sana’a. All the parts are old, but have been re-strung more recently.
Length: c. 50 cm (in total). (ME)
Provenance: German private collection.
Lit.: ‘Ethnic Jewellery. The René van der Star Collection’, ill. p. 72.
