Kingdom of Mustang, Nepal: a dance apron for ‘Cham’ dances, embroidered with the face of the great tutelary god ‘Mahakala’, as well as with 8 sacred bronzes sewn on.
This dance apron for ritual Buddhist-Lamaistic ‘Cham’ dances originates from the small, old Kingdom of Mustang, on the border between Nepal and Tibet (which today belongs to Nepal). The central, black field is embroidered with a mask of the tutelary god ‘Mahakala’, surrounded by seven additional mask faces and six embroidered ‘Dorje’ (‘diamond sceptre’) ritual objects, as each Lama (monk) displays in his right hand during prayer. The outer side of the dance apron is trimmed with red, patterned brocade. Sewn onto this edge are eight sacred appliqués made of cast brass-bronze. In the middle, left and right are two long skeleton figures, the ‘Citipati’, or ‘guardians of the burial ground’. The reverse of the dance apron is underlaid with red fabric. On the lower end hang polychrome fringes, and the upper section displays two hanging loops for wearing the apron. No damage.
Dimensions: 44 cm x 41 cm (apron without fringes and loops).
