Thomas Patch - Old Master Paintings I - 8th June 2021

Sigmund Oakeshott introduces a never before seen view of Florence by the quintessential 18th Century Englishman-in-Italy, the painter Thomas Patch (1725-1783). It will be offered at Dorotheum’s Old Masters sale on 8th June. Possibly the earliest ever topographical view of this gleaming city painted by the artist, Patch’s work records a unique prospect, captured from the top of the famous Ponte Vecchio, looking downstream upon gilded carriages crossing over the Ponte Santa Trinita, with river boats plying the waters of the Arno below, and stately palaces lining the banks on either side.
