"Victoria or the Victory of the Russian Empress" for Tsarina Catherine II., - Works of Art

pedestal with Roman armour, helmet, and plume, surrounded by trophy arms, with Herculean club, cannon, bow, arrows, drums, banners and standards, on the right Fama, hovering over the armour and proclaiming the Tsarina's glory to the world, on the right a small seated genius, winding a laurel festoon around a cannon, a turquoise turban next to him, on the left the seated Muse Clio recording the great deeds for posterity in a book ("große Helden Thaten in ein Buch der Nachwelt zu wißen einschreibet") while holding a trumpet to signal victory ("um mit schmetterndem Klag den Sieg zu verkünden"), below a closed book its flat back with sculpted cannon and wheel, the facing side of the curving base with gilt edging, bands and chain frieze, porcelain, polychromed and gilt, Height: 36,5 cm, length: 29 cm, minor restorations, Meissen, underglaze blue crossed swords with star, Marcolini Period ca. 1780, model by Johann Joachim Kändler, Victoria I, April and Mai 1773, exceedingly rare group (Ru)

This allegorical group is part of the “Great Russian Commission” of Tsarina Catherine II, for the Palais Oranienbaum near St. Petersburg
