Walther Bernt writes on Savery, “The wooded landscapes [produced by Savery] in reference to the Flemish painters, Jan Brueghel and G. van Coninxloo, with their trees growing like primeval forests, fantastical rocks and ruins are populated with wild and tame animals, which he depicted in a rather mannered style for the first time in the Netherlands. He found the opportunity to do so in frequent images of paradise, Noah’s ark, the Great Flood and Orpheus with animals...”.
