Lot No. 74

Pietro Paolo Cennini

(Rome 1661–1739)
A melon, plums, figs, pears, grapes and other fruit, with a vase of flowers, a landscape beyond,
oil on canvas, 47 x 62.5 cm, framed

We are grateful to Alberto Cottino for suggesting the attribution of the present painting.

The warm colour tones, as well as the depiction of the fruit in the present painting are typical of Pietro Paolo Cennini. A pupil of Niccolò Stanchi, he collaborated with his teacher in important commissions, such as the frescoes in Palazzo Zondarari in San Quirico d’Orcia, in 1686. During his career, Cennini realised other important decorations, such as the frescoes in the Casino degli Specchi in Soriano nel Cimino, or for important Roman palaces. According to the biographer Nicola Pio, Cennini inserted still life paintings in works by important artists such as Carlo Maratta, Francesco Trevisani, Filippo Lauri and Giovanni Paolo Panini.
