A Superb Italian Salon Cabinet,
attributed to Ferdinando Pogliani, Milan, second half of the 19th century, divisible softwood frame, ebony veneer with partly engraved ivory and bone, elaborate marquetry with figures and ornamental motifs in arabesque form, the front and upper side architecturally structured with columns and contour strips, protruding middle section, 16 drawers in total, some with spring mechanism, inner drawers and secret compartments, four doors, 232 x 144 x 55 cm, beautiful and well-preserved original condition with minor losses. Ferdinando Pogliani (1832-1899) was an Italian cabinet-maker who ran a workshop with his 3 sons Giuseppe, Paolo and Carlo. Inspired by the Renaissance, his furniture also had neoclassical features. He worked mainly with ebony, walnut and pearwood; his marquetry materials were ivory, bone, marble, etc. His workshop was famous for its high quality and enjoyed great success, for example at the World’s Fairs in Milan, Vienna, Paris and Philadelphia.
