Provenance:
The present item is one of four known and almost identical saddles. One in the Lippisches Landesmuseum in Detmold, which houses the collection of the last Foreign Minister of the Weimar Republic, Friedrich Rosen. This was a special gift to Rosen in 1908 from the then Sultan Abd al Aziz (1880-1943), who ruled as Sultan of the Alawids in Morocco from 1894 to 1908. Two other saddles of the same type are preserved in a museum in Glasgow and in the Musee des Armes, Fez, Morocco. The consignor, therefore, assumes that this saddle was an honorary gift from the Sultan for high-ranking personalities.
