Teapot sells for €149,900 at Jugendstil auction

Josef Hoffmann’s name was worth its weight in gold at Dorotheum’s 1 December 2016 Jugendstil auction; items designed by the world-class artist and preeminent representative of Austria’s design legacy were among the event’s top sellers.

The cleanly geometric silver teapot, which the Wiener Werkstätte produced in 1905, garnered a sensational €149,900 – far more than its estimate. A bidder shelled out €40,000 for a jardiniere made in 1919 that exemplifies Hoffmann’s floral decorative style. Among the other top prices that Hoffmann’s creations achieved were €50,000 for a blue carpet from the country residence of the Primavesi family that was made by Backhausen and €56,250 for a silver tea set that was designed in 1920 and produced by the Wiener Werkstätte.
