735,300 EUROS FOR A WORK BY JEAN DUBUFFET

Successful contemporary art auction

Excellent results at Dorotheum’s Contemporary Art evening auction on 5 June 2019. Right at the beginning, a bidding battle on the telephone for Bon Espoir. Paysage avec personnage (Good Hope. Landscape with Figures) by Jean Dubuffet, the founder of “Art Brut”, ended only after 15 minutes, and far above the estimated value, at 735,300 euros.

Further top prices prove the vast range of the auction: Andy Warhol’s Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli, a screenprint from 1978, reached 479,100 euros. The auction bell for Piero Dorazio’s sophisticated grid picture Ivory Tower, an oil painting from 1957, rang at the 271,700euro level.

A work by Günther Förg was knocked down at 247,300 euros, far exceeding expectations. A telephone bidder acquired the untitled “fire gouache” by Zero artist Otto Piene for 243,811 euros.

Successful sales of Austrian artists included, among others, Arnulf Rainer, Franz West, Otto Muehl and Heimo Zobernig.
