School of Antwerp, 17th Century
Portrait of an elegant lady, standing by a chair,
oil on panel, 124 x 93 cm, framed
Provenance:
Private collection, Belgium
The present portrayal of a young Flemish lady, fashionably dressed in damask silk and with a ruff typical of 1620s Antwerp high society, was once identified as a possible marriage portrait of Suzanna Cock, wife of the portrait painter Cornelis de Vos (1584–1641) and half-sister of the landscapist Jan Wildens (1586–1653).
Indeed, while the register of the present work is redolent both of the c.1622 Portrait of a Thirty Year Old Woman by Cornelis de Vos conserved in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, inv. no. 671 and the Portrait of a noblewoman with a parrot, c.1619-20 by the young Anthony van Dyck in the collection of the Phoebus Foundation in Antwerp, the refined handling has so far not yet been associated comprehensively with either artist, suggesting an accomplished hand with the artists’ close circle.
