The present canvas is an evocative description of coastal life during the Dutch Golden Age, painted by the accomplished marine and still life painter Abraham van Beyeren, who was mainly active in Delft and the Hague. Portraying the now vanished vista of Egmond aan Zee, another variant of this composition signed with monogram, without the tower, is in the Stedelijk Museum Het Prinsenhof, Delft (inv. no. NK 2780), and a further version, with the tower and dated to circa 1660 is conserved in the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest (inv. no. 5641).
