Lotto No. 1154

A Plate with Phoenix Decor, Meissen c. 1745,

porcelain, underglaze blue decoration, dinner plate with facetted spiral lip, the well with a flying phoenix surrounded by peonies, the lip with alternating flowers and a tree with an ape eating a fruit, diameter 24 cm, underglaze blue crossed swords mark with dot and blue painter mark MÖ, impressed no. 32, glaze scuffed, minor chipping to the base, (GO)

Lit.:
Cassidy-Geiger, Maureen: The Arnhold Collection of Meissen Porcelain 1710–50, New York 2008, cat. 225

This decoration goes back to Chinese Kangxi porcelain, which was produced specifically to be exported to the European market. The curved rim, however, is an adoption of European silver forms in China. The blue painter's mark MÖ refers to the well-known blue painter Johann Carl Möbius (born in 1735), who mainly produced Asian-style decorations.
