Lotto No. 1209

A Pair of Portrait Busts of Czar Alexander I and Elisabeth Alexeyevna, Fürstenberg c. 1800

biscuit porcelain, the base: porcelain and partly gilt, the shoulder bust of Czar Alexander I of Russia in dress uniform with medal and sash of the Order of St. Andrew and Czarina Elisabeth Alexeyevna (née Luise Auguste Princess of Baden) in classical dress, round pedestal with octagonal plinth, the busts inscribed "Alexander I., K. a. R." and "L. M. A., Kaiserin a. R." on the reverse, total height with base 29 cm (Alexander) and 32 cm (Elisabeth), height of the busts: 18 cm (Alexander) and 18.5 cm (Elisabeth), model by Carl Gottlieb Schubert, Fürstenberg impressed mark for biscuit porcelain (prancing horse), former’s mark "W" and incised size designation "No. II", pedestals with underglaze blue "F" marks (1790-1829), minor firing cracks, scuffed and patina, (GO)

These portrait busts are listed for the year 1802 in the archival register of Fürstenberg busts made of biscuit porcelain. Carl Gottlieb Schubert (1730-1808), who worked in the Manufactory from 1778 until his death in 1808, is mentioned as the modeller. This suggests that they were modelled between 1802 and 1808.
