Neapolitan School, 17th Century
Lot and his daughters,
oil on canvas, 98 x 127 cm, framed
Provenance:
Private European collection
The present painting depicts the Biblical episode of Lot, already stunned by wine, shortly before lying down with his two daughters. The subject was very common in seventeenth-century painting. Clearly of Neapolitan origin, this work may recall the manner of painters such as Andrea Malinconico (1635–1698), active in Naples in the second half of the seventeenth century, or the Belgian artist Niccolò De Simone (documented in Naples circa 1636–1677).
